Fremd Alumni Have Success on College Gridirons!
By Mike Brown – Director of Football Operations
The state of Wisconsin
reaped some major success this past season with the aid of several former Fremd
standouts!

Scott Tolzien (’06) had a very successful first year as the quarterback for the
Wisconsin Badgers. He helped lead the Badgers to a 10-3 record, including a
20-14 upset of the #15 Miami Hurricanes in the Champs Sports Bowl.
Tolzien and the Badgers were the highest scoring team in the Big 10 in 2009 with
31.8 points per game. Scott also finished first in passing efficiency, leading
all Big 10 quarterbacks with a 143.0 efficiency rating. His 211 pass completions
allowed him to become the first quarterback in Wisconsin history to complete over 200 passes in a season.
In just his fourth game as a starter, Tolzien was named the Big 10 Offensive
Player of the Week for his four touchdown pass performance in a 38-30 win over
Michigan
State. He was named Big 10
Offensive Player of the week once again in a 45-24 victory over Michigan. He threw four
TD passes against the Wolverines to match his career high set against Michigan State.
Tolzien became the first Wisconsin
quarterback to ever be named Offensive Player of the Week multiple times in a
season.

Jason Ford (’08) and Jimmy Norris (’09) shared in the biggest prize of the
season – a DIII National Championship for the Wisconsin Whitewater Warhawks!
Ford caught six passes for the season and scored a touchdown. Norris contributed
on special teams.

Jeff Koeneman (’06) finished his career at Carthage as the leader in pass receptions
(258) and receiving yards (3,008). Koeneman was also named Division III second
team All American for his 103.1 receiving yards per game this past season. He
led the Red Men in scoring with 78 points.
Mike Koeneman (’08) caught 19 passes and scored a pair of touchdowns while Jake
Smith (’08) scored 5-touchdowns for Carthage.
Joe Busse (’06) led the Red Men defense with 58 tackles and had a pair of sacks.
Brian Hipchen (’08) was the fifth leading tackler for the Red Men with 45
tackles and intercepted four passes.

Mark Tolzien (’08) will get the opportunity to compete for the starting
quarterback position when Holy Cross takes the field for spring practice.
Tolzien has been interning behind Patriot League player of the year and All
American Dominic Randolph
for the past two seasons. The Crusaders finished the 2009 campaign with a 9-3
record.
