VARSITY SEASON WRAP-UP Jones concludes record-setting high school career with Top-5 state finish October 20th -- With almost every record in Fremd Viking history under his belt, senior Sean Jones took aim at Illinois boys golf records while continuing his assault on the Vikings' record books. Jones had his highest first day finish at the IHSA Class 3A state tournament (14th place compared to 25th or higher) after a disappointing first day score of 78, but once again the Viking senior soared up the leader board on the second day. Jones fired a one-over par 73 on the second day, tying him for the fourth lowest score of the day in the field of 106, while earning him a tie for fourth place with college-bound golfer Theo Lederhausen (Hinsdale Central). With his third consecutive top-10 finish in the Class 3A state tournament, Jones finished his career with three-of-four years in the top 10 at the state tournament. Sean is one of only 10 other players in state history to accomplish this feat. With the fourth place finish, Jones cements his place in Illinois high school golf history as one of the best players over the past 25 years. Only players like D.A. Points (PGA Tour player), Kevin Streelman (PGA Tour Player), Ross Frankenberg (UofI freshman), Luke Guthrie (UofI sophomore, 2-time state champ), and Joe Smith (Rantoul-grad, 3-of-4 years in the top 10) have had comparable or greater Illinois high school careers. Also, with his 73 on the final day, Jones proved himself to be a pressure player by owning the lowest scoring average on the second day of the tournament of any senior over the past four years. This includes Auburn-bound Dan Stringfellow (St. Viator); 2008 champion Joe Carlson (St. Viator); Lederhausen; and Nequa Valley senior Stephen Powers (US Am qualifier). With the golf season now complete, the Vikes begin preparing for next season. Juniors Brad Peterson and Brad Beutler are already signed up for tournaments with the MAJGT over the next month and a half, while junior Jackson Tworek is sure to follow. The talented returning trio have big shoes to fill in the absence of Jones and fellow-seniors Chris Ramirez and Max Stejskal. Ramirez is likely to play college golf in Illinois on the heels of his 77.5 scoring average this season. Stejskal does not intend to play competitive golf in college, but will continue to play whether he attends schools like Stanford or Prinecton. Also returning next year will be Brian Bodolay who had an injury-plagued 2009 campaign, but will undoubtedly prepare himself for a key role in Viking success next year. F/S SEASON WRAP-UP Coming |

Jones shines again; Vikings finish fourth
at Glenbrook North Sectional October 12th -- Senior Sean Jones continued his assault on the Fremd Boys Golf record books with yet another remarkable round in the state series. Jones' 1-over par 71 at Sportsman's Golf Club in Northbrook tied St. Viator senior Dan Stringfellow. Stringfellow won medalist honors by defeating Jones on the first hole of an on-course playoff. Jones earned a spot in the Class 3A state tournament for the fourth consecutive year. Jones score now gives him seven of the top 10 scores in FHS history. The score also drops Jones average to 74.1 for the season. The average is good for tops all-time in school history in 18-hole tournament play. If Jones can finish in the top-10 for the third consecutive year, he'll be the sixth player in IHSA history to finish in the top-10 in three of four eligible high school years. No player has finished all four years in the top-10, although Stringfellow has that opportunity this year. Unfortunately for the Vikes, though, Jones is the only player going on to the state tournament. Senior Chris Ramirez finished in a tie for ninth place with a 76, but missed the cut for state by one stroke. Junior Brad Beutler missed the cut of 75 by three strokes (78). The Vikings earned fourth place in the regional for the second consecutive year. New Tried defeated St. Viator for the tournament title via a fifth score playoff due to their tie at 297. Prospect, concluding a successful year, finished in fourth place with a 301. The Vikes posted a 308. |

Vikes battle the elements to place second
in Class 3A Regional; Jones claims medalist honors in playoff October 6th -- Senior Sean Jones added to his high school accolades by claiming medalist honors in a sudden-death playoff against St. Viator freshman Luke DeTrempe. With a birdie on the first hole of the playoff, Jones continued his one-week return from an elbow injury by holding off a foursome of St. Viator Lions: DeTrempe, Auburn signee Dan Stringfellow (third, 74), defending state champion Joe Carlson (fourth, 75) and Brad Klune (fifth, 75). Led by Jones, the Vikes fired a 324 to earn second place and a spot in next weeks sectional at Sportsman's Golf Club. Junior Brad Peterson shot 83, while the remaining Vikes all finished with 85s. The Vikings advance to sectionals for the fifth consecutive year. |

Sean Jones repeats as MSL Champ; first to
do so in nearly 20 years September 29th -- Shaking off the rust from a 24-day absence from 18-hole competition proved to be easier than anticipated for senior Sean Jones at the MSL Conference tournament. Jones thrived, where most struggled, on Tuesday at Poplar Creek Country Club in becoming just the second player in history to repeat as MSL Conference Champion. In spite of difficult playing conditions, 25 mph gusts and sub-50s temperatures, Jones navigated his way around Poplar to a 76, 6-over score to win, over the field of 72 individuals. Only six players shot under 80 in the tournament, leaving most players well into the 80s and 90s. Jones, competing for the first time in an 18-hole tournament since September 5th, recorded just one birdie and seven bogeys en route to the repeat championship. Jones's score was the Vikes only score in the 70s, but the Vikes still finished third in the tournament and third overall in the conference behind Prospect (MSL Champ) and Barrington. Both senior Chris Ramirez and junior Brad Beutler fired 83s in the tournament, while junior Jackson Tworek finished with an 86. Beutler and Ramirez tied for 15th, earning them MSL All-Conference honors alongside Jones. |

Viking golf has a long-standing tradition of excellence in the Mid-Suburban League and throughout the area. Head coach Len Fiocca took over the program in 1966 and coached for 32 seasons, guiding the program to an undefeated season (15-0) in 1984, culminating in a state tournament berth. Over his 32 years as head coach, Fiocca amassed 310 wins with just 131 loses in match play. Fiocca coached the Vikings to four state tournament top-7s. In both 1977 and 1984 the Vikings claimed runner-up honors, while in 1988 and 1995 the Vikes finished in sixth and fourth respectively. Following Fiocca's brilliant tenure as boys golf coach, David Saxe took over in 1999 and continued the success started by Fiocca. Saxe guided the Vikings to a 72-47 record over 9 seasons as head coach. In 2006, the boys placed 15th at the IHSA State Tournament. Saxe left FHS after the 2006-07 school year, making way for first-time head coach Josh Teschner to take over for the 2007-2008 school year. The 2007 school year was filled with highs-and-lows, but none higher than sophomore Sean Jones' and Erik Peterson's Top-12 finishes at the IHSA State Tournament in Bloomington (view pictures on the right-side of the page). In 2008, Jones placed eighth at the state tournament for the second consecutive year. Jones shot 1-under on the second day of the tournament for a two day total of 146 (10 strokes better than 2007). The Vikings also claimed the conference title in 2008 for the first time in 16 years. Jones was the conference champ, marking the second time in 3 years that a Fremd player claimed the individual conference title. Cementing his place as one of the greatest golfers in Fremd boys golf history, Sean Jones claimed fourth place in the 2009 state tournament via a 1-over par 73 in the second round at the Class 3A state tournament. Jones became only the 10th player in IHSA history to claim a top-10 finish in three state tournaments. Jones nearly claimed the equivalent of the high school grand slam by winning a conference, regional and sectional championship prior to the state tournament. Jones tied for the sectional championship with eventual state champion, Dan Stringfellow (St. Viator). |
