Head Coach (Throws): Jim Aikens

Fremd Track and Field Coaches

 

2012, begins Coach Aikens 23rd year as head coach of the Fremd track team.  He is also responsible for coaching the throwers.  This is was also coach Aikens 1st year as Assistant Boys Cross Country Coach. Coach Aikens has served as the director of Junior Athletics for USA Track & Field in the state of Illinois from 1993-1996.  Coach Aikens also has USA Track & Field Level 1 and Level 2 national certification.  He is a Level One USATF Lead Instructor and is a USATF Nationally Certified Official in the throws.  Coach Aikens served as President for the Illinois Track and Cross-Country Coaches Association from 2003 to 2005 and currently serves as co-clinic director for the ITCCCA annual coaches clinic. Coach Aikens was inducted into the Illinois Track & Cross Country Coaches Association Hall Of Fame in 2005. Many of his throwers have earned conference, sectional, state, and national honors.  In the past 19 years Coach Aikens team’s have won eight MSL west titles, six MSL conference championships, six sectional championships, and two fifth place finish at the state meet.  Coach Aikens threw the shot put, hammer and discus in college.  He also teaches Earth Science , Geology and Astronomy at Fremd High School. 

 

Assistant Coach (Distance): Darius Sanchez

This is Coach Sanchez 's sixth year as an assistant track coach in charge of the distance runners.  In his short time here he has already made a dramatic impact on the Fremd distance program. He has sent a number of runners to the state meet and was Awarded the 2010 Assistant Coach of the year Award presented by the Illinois Track & Cross Country Coaches Association.  Coach Sanchez is also in his first year as the head  Fremd Boys Cross Country Coach.  He was a member of his high schools state champion 1600m relay team and is the 400m record holder at his high school.  Coach Sanchez also ran on the University of Wisconsin's Track & Field team.  Coach Sanchez coached track and cross country at a  number of high schools (Union Grove, Wisc., Monona Grove, Wisc., & McFarland H. S., Wisc.) before coming to Fremd High Schools.  This Coach Sanchez's sixth year teaching at Fremd and he teaches honors biology, freshman connected curriculum biology and biology II.

 

Assistant Coach (Jumps, Sprints & Vault): Brad Schroeder
Coach Schroeder is in his fifth year as an assistant in charge of jumps & pole vault at Fremd H.S. his influence on the jumpers & pole vaulters has been remarkable.  Prior to Fremd, Coach Schroeder coached the jumps and pole vault for five years at Hoffman Estates High School.  During his time at Hoffman Estates Coach Schroeder coached numerous conference and sectional champions  as well as many state qualifiers.  It wasn't easy but we were very fortunate to have coach Schroeder come to Fremd and continue to pass his vast knowledge of these technical events onto our athletes.  Coach Schroeder also teaches Earth Science ,  Applied Science and Astronomy at Fremd. 


Assistant Coach (Jumps and Sprints): Joe Samojedny

 

Coach “Samo” has been coaching track for over thirty five years. He is an outstanding technician, and his understanding of the biomechanics involved in track & field is unmatched.  During his coaching career he has coached a multitude of conference, sectional and state placers.  Coach Samo is also a recipient of the “Dave Pasquini Assistant Coach” Award, which identifies him as one of the best at what he does in the state.  Coach Samojedny was the head football coach at Fremd High School during the seventies, eighties and early nineties.  His 1992 football team was undefeated.   Coach Samojedny was a varsity award winner in football, basketball and track while in college.  He is also an outstanding educator.  He is now retired from teaching but is often found substitute teaching at Fremd.

 

Assistant Coach (Sprints): Lou Sponsel
This is coach Sponsel's fourth year coaching track at Fremd and has had a major impact on the sprints at Fremd. The 2011 4X100 & 4x200 relays broke school records that had stood for over 30 years and the 4X200 relay medaled at the state meet.  Coach Sponsel graduated from Fremd H.S. where he competed in football, wrestling and track for the Vikings.  He went on to play football at Northern Illinois University and was a student  assistant coach for two years with the Huskies.  Coach Sponsel has been a mainstay in the Viking football program for the past eight years.  Coach Sponsel earned his masters in Exercise Physiology  at Northern Illinois University and brings a wealth of information to the Fremd track program.  Coach Sponsel teaches Physical Education and is the lead advisor for the United Clubs of Fremd.

Assistant Volunteer Coach (Vault): Jim Mellado
Jim Mellado

This is coach Mellado’s 7th year serving as a volunteer pole vault coach at Fremd—four with the girl’s team and the last three with the boy’s team.  During his tenure, Jim has coached three state qualifiers in the pole vault with 3rd and 4th place finishes.  Previously, Jim served as a volunteer coach at North Central College working with two-time All-American decathlete Kurt Hasenstein. Jim was a member of the 1983 NCAA Division I Indoor & Outdoor National Championship team at Southern Methodist University where he competed in the decathlon and held the school record. He went on to place 26th in the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games and 4th at the 1987 Pan American Games, competing for the country of his birth, El Salvador. Jim is currently the President of the Willow Creek Association—a leadership development organization.  He earned a BS in Mechanical Engineering from SMU in 1985 and an MBA from the Harvard Business School in 1991

 

Assistant Volunteer Coach (Sprints): Tom Rochfort

Coach Rochfort starts his first season with the boys program after having coached the girls hurdlers for the past 2 seasons. He has coached some 18 years in the community including football and baseball and has been the
St Thomas of Villanova Vikings track coach for 15 seasons. Over 90 girls and boys have qualified for the IESA state finals in that time earning over 30 medals including 3 state champions:( boys shot,800m,and girls 4x100). He was the boys head T&F coach at St Viator for 2 seasons (300m hurdle marks were set twice). Graduated HS an mvp with records in LJ, HH, and 2 relays, briefly held 400H mark at Harper and football walk-on earning a partial at Univ. of Tulsa. Tom bends nails over now(carpenter) and proudest of his 3 beautiful and productive Americans,all former FHS athletes: Danielle, Tommy, and Colleen.

Assistant Volunteer Coach (Distance): Matt Winter

Coach Winter has been coaching youth sports for over ten years.   He has been actively involved in Fremd running for the past four years, and last fall he was assistant coach on the Fremd Boys Cross Country team.  Coach Winter is an avid runner and has competed in many road races including the Chicago Marathon.  He holds a BS Industrial Engineering from Iowa State, an MBA from the University of Chicago. He recently became certified to teach secondary education: Physics, Earth & Space Science as well as Business, Marketing, Computer Education and Technology Education.

Assistant Volunteer Coach (Throws): Matt Duffey

Matt Duffey graduated from Fremd H.S. in 2007. He was a two sport athlete at Fremd H.S. where he participated in football and track.  He earned his college degree in Engineering from Purdue University.  Matt has volunteered to help coach Aikens work with the throwers in the past and this year we are looking forward to a more extensive role in this area. Matt works full time as a Product Development Engineer for Littelfuse Inc.

Assistant Volunteer Coach (Weights): Jeff Bobek

 
Assistant Volunteer Coach (Distance): Frank Goznikar

 

This is Frank's first season helping out with track team and he brings a lot of enthusiasm and knowledge to the program. Prior to joining the program, Frank was an assistant coach on a number of successful girl's cross country teams in the 90's. He also helped out with the boys cross country team this last fall. Frank competed as a high school varsity runner in cross country and track and was a very decorated runner while doing so. He continued to run at University of Illinois Chicago.

This year Frank is teaching physics and AP physics.

Assistant Volunteer Coach (Throws): Jordan Walker
Jordan is a graduate of Fremd H.S. ('07) and a Fremd Track alum, throwing shot put and discus all four years.  He was also a starter on the Fremd Football team.  Jordan attended Illinois State University to receive his degree in Physical Education and is in the process of completing his student teaching experience.
