INITIAL LICENSING PHASE DRIVERS AGE 16-17

bullet Parental consent required to obtain license; parent must verify that a minimum 50 hours of behind-the- wheel practice with 10 hours of night driving have taken place.
bullet All occupants under age 19 must wear safety belts
bullet The driver is limited to one passenger under the age of 20 for the first 12 months following issuance of the license, or until the driver reaches age 18, whichever occurs first. Siblings, stepsiblings, children and stepchildren of the driver are exempt. After this period, the number of passengers limited to one in front seat and to the number of safety belts in back seat.
bullet 10 p.m.- 6:00 a.m. curfew Sunday-Thursday; 11:00 p.m.-6:00 a. m. curfew Friday and Saturday only for 16-year-olds
bullet Must maintain a conviction-free driving record for six months  prior to turning 18 before moving to the Full Licensing Phase.
bullet Wireless phone use while driving is prohibited for drivers under the age of 19. Any person, regardless of age is prohibited from using a wireless phone at any time while driving in a School Speed Zone and Construction Zones.
bullet An electronic message includes electronic mail, a
text message, an instant message, or command or request to access an Internet site.
