The video resources from Discovery Streaming add to the VHS and DVD media already present in the library. Discovery Streaming is used by teachers to enhance lessons and engage students.  Teachers can show all or part of video segments giving them the freedom to elicit discussion among students as the video is played.

Discovery Streaming is a digital video-on-demand service brought to you by Discovery Education.

With Discovery Streaming, you get:

· The largest and most current K-12 digital video/ video clip library available today

· The only standards-based video-on-demand application shown to increase student achievement

· Practical teacher and student learning resources

· Access to a wide variety of producers—Discovery Channel School, United Learning, Standard Deviants, Weston Woods, and many more

· Unparalleled options for customization and local control

· New content and features continuously added throughout the year

To log into united streaming you must first enter a passcode to create a new account. Please contact Mike Bachrodt, x2760, for this passcode.

Follow the instructions for creating a new account and you are ready to go. Play with Discovery Streaming website. There are many ways for you to incorporate video into your lessons. You can even use snippets of an entire video so you can take only what you need for your class. It is a wonderful way to enhance your lessons.

By the way, there is no need to save any video to your H drive as the District has a special arrangement with Discovery Streaming that allows us to house all the videos right here in District 211. Access will be fast! Saving videos will only cause our server space to be used up so please do not download and save a video!

TIPS

You may not know that your STUDENTS can access and use the same videos and video clips! It's easy; they go to Discovery Streaming and use the passcode you supply to create a user name and password. (The passcode is available once you are on Discovery streaming, under "My Preferences".

How is this useful? In a practical sense, if a student misses a day with a movie, it is easy for them to make up. Or, students can find clips of educational movies to use for their own presentations (Thanks to Josh Teschner for that use.) Furthermore, the Discovery Streaming site emails you when a student uses the site. The site, itself, provides many more ideas of how to utilize it, including creating quizzes for students to access through the site that show images or clips for each question, if you so choose. There are also lesson plan ideas and discussion guides available.

So, its more than just an easy movie source to stream into the classroom...it can be.....interactive! (Nicole LaBeau, English, October, 05)
