Technology Tips
Technology resources for
Fremd Faculty and Staff

The following tips have been submitted by the FHS Faculty. Please email the Technology Coordinator,  Michael Bachrodt ,should you wish to contribute a technology tip. Each Department is encouraged to create a department technology tip page for their own subject specific tips. I would be happy to put a link here to your departmentpage. Please let me know!

This area is likely to grow very quickly. I will probably create separate pages for each tip area in the future.

Guidelines

Tips can be of two types.

Managerial
The emphasis is on helping make your day to day tasks easier and/or more efficient.

Instructional
The focus is on improved teaching and learning methods or strategies. This type of tip should not be department specific.

File Usage

Sharing Files Across the District (Suzanne Bohrnell, December, 05)

Accessing Student Drives Easily (Karen Clindaniel, December, 05)

Game Templates

There is a website that contains PowerPoint game templates (Jeopardy, Millionaire...). I know that a Jeopardy one is available on our server, but more are available online, and you can access them from home if you didn't put the template, or example, on disk. They are also easier to use (click on a slide while formatting it and enter the information it asks for) and have a bit more "extras" for fun. www.teachnet.com/lesson/misc/winnergame022500.html (Nicole LaBeau, English, Sept. 05)

Hyperlinks

Make life Easier....Create Hyperlinks.... (Sabra Gerber, English, April, 06)

Lotus Notes and iNotes

Organize your Email with Folders! (Nicole LaBeau, English, Oct. 05)

Projector Use

Making Information on the Projection Screen Easier to Read (Sabra Gerber, December, 05)

Scanners

When using the HP Scanner, a prompt may come up to ask you if you want to scan another document. Before responding yes, place the next document in the scanner, then select yes or OK. The scanner will automatically scan and place this document in your file as the next page. Text will flow as if only one file! (Julie Zinger, Science, Nov. 05)

Word

Microsoft Word has a feature called AutoSummarize. It can work for you (if you remember that it is not perfect!) The AutoSummarize feature can help students who are struggling to find the main topic in their reading selections or to organize their writing. To use Word to help students get the main point of an essay:

Open a Word document (or copy and paste text from the Internet into a Word document)

go to Tools>AutoSummarize, choose Highlight Key Points

Word will highlight what it thinks are the main points of the text. Because Word is not perfect, students should only use this feature as a guide. (Karisa LaFleur, Health, HEHS, Nov. 05)

Video Use

There is a great math and science connections page by ESPN that has videos with sports figures going through the math and science involved with the sports: vectors, similar triangles, force, etc. Very interesting. The video clips can be viewed/streamed online OR taped from ESPN2. They usually show them at 4:30 am on Mondays. In addition to the videos, there are lessons on how to incorporate the video. (Shannon Denna, Math, October, 05)
