Text Box: I’ve worked here at Fremd for eight years now, having student taught here as well. During this time, I have substituted throughout the building, taught all levels of English, coached Powder Puff, coached girls’ and boys’ swimming, sponsored Fremd’s literary magazine (The Conspiracy), and worked with students on essential skills for graduation requirements. Currently, I teach juniors and freshmen, coach the F/S boys’ swim team in the winter and work with students on The Conspiracy staff.
Having grown up in Arlington Heights, I come from the area and graduated from Hersey. My bachelor’s degree in English is from Northwestern University and my master’s degree in written communications is from National Louis University. I feel as though I never leave school or stop learning, both of which stand true. “Kids these days” continually amaze me; they also remind me of what’s really important in life and keep me honest and laughing. I couldn’t love my job more.
In the classroom, I try to give daily homework assignments, ideally with some time in class a couple days a week to start on it. Other larger assignments, such as papers, projects and presentations, have a due date and students can make their own schedule for completing them. As a Text Box: result, weekends are used.
I enjoy watching student epiphanies and growth. Though they may be extremely uncomfortable as they are in new situations and held responsible for their choice and work, the final confidence they display is worth the frustration and struggle.

Text Box: My Philosophy for Students
Text Box: I believe that every individual can (and will) learn. In English there is an obvious focus on reading and writing as communication. I stress the link between writer—his culture/society—and the content and style. Knowing one helps to understand the other, no matter the time period or purpose behind the reading or other communiText Box: cations.
Students will gain skills, experience and knowledge to be prepared for their future in school, work, and life. Dealing with people, in writing and speaking, is impossible to avoid.
By this, I include group work to teach students to successfully function with other individuals. In their future jobs, they will Text Box: have to both rely on others’ work and know how to problem solve with others.
At the core, I believe in student responsibility for their choices, and hope they find a clearer path toward personal integrity. While I guide them, I allow natural consequences for their actions and choices. As a result, they grow to learn and discover for themselves.
