Summer Reading FAQ

  • How do I choose a book?

Read the description or preview the book if possible. You should read a  book that interests you.  You must read a book from the list for your ESL level.

  • What does lexile mean?

The lexile number tell you about the readability of the book.  A higher number is usually more difficult, but don't let that be the only factor you use in choosing a book.

  • Should I buy the book?

That's really your decision.  If you check it out from a library, you will need to return it by the due date.  If you buy the book, you can keep it, write in it, make notes in it, and use it during the in class writing assignment.

  • How much is a book?

Paperback novels usually cost from $5-$12.

  • What do I have to know after I have read the book?

You will be asked to write about the book.
Know who the main characters are.
Know the plot.
Understand the conflict.

  • How do I know I understand the book?

One good way is to meet with other students reading the book and share your ideas, like a book club.

  • Are there study guides to help me?

Look on this page to see if your chosen novel has a study guide.  It is optional, but maybe that will help you understand the book better.

  • What kind of assignment will I have to do for my English class?

You will have to write an in class essay about your book or a project.
