FITNESS RESOURCE UNIT
This problem based unit is designed to help you gain a solid understanding of lifelong fitness. Living a healthy lifestyle requires proper nutrition, healthy habits and daily exercise. The unit's goal is to increase your knowledge of fitness and nutrition, understand the benefits of fitness and a healthy diet, create a personal fitness program and daily diet to improve your wellness and answer the learning challenge with your group. You will explore a variety of topics, such as, heart rate, target heart rate, body mass index, cardiovascular fitness, cholesterol and diet. On this page you will find the information you need to complete this problem based unit. All assignments will be printed out and turned in at the end of the unit.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
Ken is 45 years old and concerned about his current health condition. Ken works as an accountant for a very lucrative agency in downtown Chicago. He often works long hours and experiences a great amount of stress. Ken does not exercise regularly and often eats on the run. He is 6 feet tall, 234 pounds and has a cholesterol level of 239 mg/dl. In addition, there is a history of heart disease in Ken's family.
LEARNING CHALLENGE
Your medical group has been hired by Ken's agency to work with its employees to educate them about health risks and recommend lifestyle changes to any at-risk employees. You will research and analyze fitness and nutrition, and learn how each impacts one's health. Your goal is to create a plan for Ken to present to the class that will improve Ken's health and allow him to live a less risky lifestyle.
