Diffusion In Action
  • http://www.emc.maricopa.edu/faculty/farabee/BIOBK/BioBooktransp.html#Cells%20and%20Diffusion
  • When molecules of a substance are in equal concentrations on both sides of a membrane, the molecules are said to have reached dynamic equilibrium.

Osmosis In Blood Cells
6
Osmosis In Plant Cells
7
Types of Solutions
  • Hypertonic Solution = higher concentration of water in the cell than outside the cell

  • Hypotonic Solution = higher concentration of water outside the cell than inside the cell

  • Isotonic Solution = equal concentrations of water inside and outside the cell

Facilitated Diffusion

9
Active Transport
  • Requires energy
  • Moves molecules against their concentration gradient (from low concentration to high concentration).
10
Endocytosis (Remember, there are two types)
  • Phagocytosis
    • Cell “eating”
  • Pinocytosis
    • Cell “drinking”
11
Phagocytosis
12
Pinocytosis
  • The same as phagocytosis, only this is cell “drinking,” where the cell membrane engulfs liquids rather than solids.
13
Exocytosis
