For history is to the nation rather as memory is to the individual. As an individual
deprived of memory becomes disoriented and lost, not knowing where he has been or
where he is going, so a nation denied a conception of its past will be disabled in
dealing with its present and its future.

-Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr., American Historian

The whole history of the progress of human liberty shows that all concessions yet
made to her august claims have been born of earnest struggle...
If there is no struggle, there is no progress.

-Frederick Douglass, Black Abolitionist

History teaches us a categorical lesson: that once a people are determined to
become free, then nothing can stop them from reaching their goal.
-
Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Winner of Nobel Peace Prize

Create a posse of dead people. Create an entourage of heroes. Put their pictures
on your wall, and keep them in your mind. They will remind you of your place in the hidden river of wisdom. They'll serve as models. They'll give you an honest
perspective on how you're doing.
-David Brooks, American Journalist

It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us--that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion; that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain; that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom; and that the government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.
-
Abraham Lincoln, Address at Gettysburg
